Surgery

An ACL reconstruction is a surgery which repairs the torn knee ligament. Its procedures have been developed over a long period of time, with historical physicians Hippocrates and Claudius Galen being some of the earliest to refer to the ACL and its importance (Davarinos et al, 2014). The first recorded ACL reconstruction was in 1934 by an Italian surgeon, and advancements continued including different tendons used, synthetic techniques and tendons from other people.

In Australia if an ACL reconstruction is needed it is quite common to have either a ACL reconstruction that uses a thigh or hamstring tendon, with a exercise based rehabilitation program to follow post surgery.
